Education system
The government of New Zealand has strong quality assurance systems to ensure high-quality education at every level of the education system, both public and private.

The New Zealand government agencies monitor the quality of the education system in all areas. They also make sure that students gain the skills they need to obtain qualifications that are relevant.

The Ministry of Education, Education Review Office, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Universities in New Zealand and the Education Council of Aotearoa, New Zealand are some of the agencies responsible for quality assurance.

New Zealand has 8 state-funded universities, 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) which have been unified into the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), and around 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs), which include English language schools as well.

The New Zealand education system focuses on both educational achievement and practical learning. The tertiary education system has 3 types:

  1. Universities: About 600 private colleges and universities and 8 state-funded universities in New Zealand. Public universities in New Zealand offer undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes to the students.
  2. ITPs: Institutes of technology and polytechnics are focused on vocational and practical learning programs in preparing the students for industry. ITPs are state-funded tertiary institutions which provide a wide and a good range of education and training programs including full degree and a few postgraduate courses.
  3. Wānanga: If you are someone who is fascinated in learning about the standard or traditional values of Maori cultures, then Wānanga institutes are right for you. The institutes teach you everything about the culture of the Maori people, from the languages to Haka (a type of ceremonial Māori dance).
