What is Sport Science?
Sport science is the study of how the healthy human body works during exercise, and how sport and physical activity promote health, physically, mentally and socially. The study of sport science incorporates many physiology, psychology, anatomy, engineering and chemistry with business and management skills to produce graduates who are capable of careers in a range of industries.
Why study Sport and Exercise Science?
As technology involves the need for athletes to get any extra edge becomes more acute, your skills will be valued. If you enjoy sports, then working in it every day, no matter what sport it is, would be a dream job. Sports science puts you right at the heart of it, with plenty of placement opportunities.
What are some of the courses you will be taking?
A typical sport science degree will take you either three or four years to complete depending on the articulation you receive and the university. It’s a balance between theoretical and practical work where lectures and seminars are supported by independent study and research, while knowledge is applied through both laboratory work and practical exercise sessions. Some of the majors you can choose from includes exercise physiology, sports nutrition, disability and inclusion etc.
The course teaches you how our body works internally, with all the muscles, bones, tissue and nerve systems working together as one. You can learn even more on how our bodies function to get the outcome we need to improve our skills physically and psychologically.
What can you do with a Sport Science degree?
Nowadays, many athletes are becoming influencers hired by sports agencies in view to promote and raise awareness of sports activities in Singapore. This also means that the sports industry in Singapore is expanding!
Sports management is a common destination for graduates and makes use of the business and management skills learned on the course, often in positions within sports clubs and organisations.
Some graduates may prefer to work in hospitals as a sport psychologists or physiotherapists. These often requires additional qualifications, but a Sport Science degree can definitely be a stepping stone for you to gain entry to study health science related courses. In fact, studying a sport science degree can be pathway for students who wish to study allied health courses but does not meet the requirements.
For those interested in teaching, sports education may be a good choice of career path and there are more and more roles available, from teaching children in a school environment to instructing clients as a personal trainer.

Deakin’s Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science helps you apply knowledge and skills in exercise and sport science to improve performance, health and participation of individuals, athletes and teams through training, coaching and advice. You will learn in world-class facilities at our Elite Sports Precinct in Geelong and brand new Specialised Indoor Exercise and Sport Science building in Burwood (due for completion by Trimester 2, 2019). You will also graduate job-ready with 220 hours of practical experience via the Exercise Programming and Exercise and Sports Science Practicum units with the opportunity to participate in work experience placements in a variety of environments such as:
- AFL/VFL football clubs
- Football Federation Victoria
- Tennis Australia
- WNBL clubs
- Cricket Victoria
- private strength and conditioning and high-performance centres (including Institutes of Sport)
- recreational gyms
- rehabilitation clinics.
Deakin’s Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science is the first and longest-standing undergraduate course in Victoria, with an accredited pathway to register and practice as an Accredited Exercise Scientist with the peak national accrediting body, Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA).
